STATEMENT ON UPCYCLED WORK

My current body of work is a dialogue between the past and present, exploring the tension between fragility and resilience. Broken ceramics, silk flowers, vintage jewelry and gold leaf  have been central to my creative process for decades, serving as both material and metaphor.

These elements reflect the beauty of imperfection, the richness of transformation, and the allure of combining the delicate with the bold.

As I approach these materials and concepts in fresh new ways, I find myself rediscovering the joy of blending the familiar with the unexpected, celebrating beauty and versatility while staying true to my roots. These materials feel like home to me.

The selected materials and embellishments used invoke the nostalgia of a childhood blessed by two dynamic grandmothers who came of age during the Great Depression; one was ingenious about recycling and repurposing and saw value in almost everything, and the other loved costume jewelry, flashy clothing and fabrics of all kinds, and freely allowed my sister and me unlimited access to these “treasures.”

Each piece that I create becomes a testament to the enduring power of reinvention and homage to the past, infused with the possibilities of a hope-filled present and future. Through my work, I invite viewers to consider how we can mend, adorn, and celebrate the fragments of our lives, transforming them into something uniquely whole and more authentic.
